History
As our nation fought for its independence, a group of enslaved African Americans from Williamsburg and surrounding rural areas met in secret to worship. The group would eventually come out of hiding and create a permanent house of worship in Williamsburg proper, just steps from Duke of Gloucester Street. In 1856, a newly-constructed brick building was dedicated, and would remain the home of the First Baptist Church for about 100 years until the congregation moved to a new church building on Scotland Street. For more than two centuries, worshipers have gathered together for a single purpose, a testament of their faith in God, inspired by their early leaders that included Gowan Pamphlet.
